In the footsteps of Buddha: the 2nd of the First 7 places / ThatTa HtarNa

After the Buddha to-be attained Enlightenment, He stayed at the Bhodi tree for 7 days and then at another 6 places nearby for 7 days each, altogether for 49 days from Enlightenment. All these 7 places the ThatTaHtarNa သတၱဌာန are the places to visit at the Mahabodhi Mahavihara.

We got to the Mahabodhi Mahavihara a total of 5 times during our pilgrimage and visited all 7 Places each time. The first was during the afternoon of 11-Dec, our first day at Gaya, when all were taken to there by the DarNa group when everything was explained by the MyaungMya Sayadaw who is residing at the Myanmar Vihar in Bodha Gaya. Pyone and I stayed back after the tour to complete our offering of gold leaves and candle lighting at all 7 Places, instead of going back to the Myanmar Vihar for dinner and back again. On our return on foot, I had Indian fried noodle from a cart vendor and we had Tibetan dinner with lassi.

The next morning, others in my room went to the Mahabodhi Mahavihara at 04:00 for dawn pilgrimage. It was only then I realized that I had missed an opportunity to visit it during our time. That evening, we went there after the Day-2 tours and then for the 3rd time the next morning predawn at 04:00 before breakfast time and departure for the pilgrimage circuit to Rajgir and Nalanda.

After contemplating for 7 days at the Bodhi tree, Buddha moved to the hill to the south and looked at the First Place without even winking for the next 7 days. This is the 2nd of the first 7 places ဒုတိယ သတၱဌာန Animesh Lochan Stupa.

Animesh Lochan Stupa

Location: North-east of Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bodh Gaya.
Importance: At this place, Lord Buddha spent the ‘2nd Week’ after his enlightenment, looking at the Bodhi Tree continuously for 7 days without closing his eyes in a deep divine pleasure state.
In the memory of this divine state, we now see an ancient Stupa here built of bricks with inscriptions & figures on it.
